I picked it up intuitively mostly. After learning numerous other divination systems and studying cosmology and metaphysics, I finally had a working understanding of divination system development. I began to collect my bones, stones, and shells, and other items to begin my set. As it happens, I have a dear friend who is an Akan priest and over time I began refining my application of the bones through his instruction. We don't have the same method. Each reader has their own method and set as it is highly customized for the reader. Working with him, however, helped me to build confidence that I was moving in the right direction.
My method is based on African and South American styles. It is a living system and is not a fixed set of bones with the same meanings. It still evolves as I add new bones and take away others as intuited and as I meet other bone readers and explore each other's methods. After having explored other's methods, I now realize that my method I intuited is very similar to one of the most expansive ones used.. and that it is an advanced set that normally takes ten years or more to build over time. ]Mine took 3 years to initially develop. I guess I just jumped into the deep end and learned to swim.
Reading bones allows me to get a glimpse into the client's life by casting a picture through the metaphor of the bones onto the casting mat. I have several casting mats as each addresses the reading from a different approach. A general reading may look at your overall situation, love, relationships, finances, job, family, home, health, friends, subconscious, blocks, keys for success, spiritual and heavenly forces, forces of nature, and advice. Readings can be 20 minutes up to and hour or so depending on the client and the situation explored. I may also combine other methods for additional clarity such as the I Ching, Tarot, Astrology, Numerology, etc. Some readings are recorded to review later and I try to take a picture of the layout for them as a meditation tool.
All in all Bone divination is a comprehensive method of situation analysis and problem solving that works so well it has survived 10,000 years or more of use. Frankly, It would have died out long ago if it did not have some merit for those that have relied on it for generations. I invite you to try it and see whats in the bones for you.
